weekly journal no. 2

Happy birthday to me!

My birthday was this week, and I am officially 30! I’ve been reflecting some on routines and habits that I have, what I want to keep and what I can leave behind. I’ve really managed to dig in to a writing routine that feels like it’s working for me and helps to keep me moving. Check it out below.

Writing Routine

01. Free write.
Last week I talked about the free writing ritual I’ve been working on (and finding success with). So I start my writing time with one of the steps in that process—free write a page, type for five minutes, or find the gems.

02. Micro.
I love writing micros, and I’ve gotten into a great rhythm with them since I started posting them to my Patreon. I got the idea for my process from this website, but the basics are: write a prose piece, turn it into a poem, turn it back into prose (without looking at the original) then make a final edit, where you can decide to keep it prose or go back to a poem. You’re supposed to only do one step a day, so this is the next thing I do after the free writing. I like to try and do something slightly different than what I did in the free write. For example, if I did the ‘find the gems’ step of the free write, I would write a new micro prose piece. Or, if I did the free writing itself, I would edit a prose piece in some way (prose to poetry or vice versa or a final edit). Does that make sense?

03. Longform projects.
This is the stuff that takes weeks or months to complete—short stories, chapbooks, novels. I also sometimes use this space for admin stuff, like submitting to lit mags. Just like with the second step, I like to mix it up depending on what I did previously—if I spent the first two steps editing, I’m more likely to try and generate new writing, but if I’ve already written a lot, I’ll edit or work on lit mags.

Promoting myself is hard, but I’ve gotta do it, right?
