weekly journal no. 1

Surprise, I'm alive!

One of the things I reflected on this week are things I’ve been trying out lately that I’ve found helpful for my mental state/writing practice. One of them, which I’ve found helpful even though it’s been inconsistent, is a free writing practice loosely based on somatic poetry rituals developed by CAConrad. Check out my process below.

Free Writing Ritual

01. Free write a page.
Day one, write as fast as you can for five minutes, dumping everything out of your brain. Bonus points if you ignore the lines (if your paper has lines). The first few times I did this, all I wrote was ‘I don’t know what to write.’ After about a week, I started to actually write down some interesting (and very vulnerable!) stuff.

02. Type for five minutes.
Day two, type what you wrote and then keep going until five minutes is up. More stream of consciousness, this time with typing instead of hand written. By typing what you wrote you get back in it, and then the new medium gives you a chance to play with it more in a different way.

03. Find the gems.
Spend a few days reading over what you wrote and picking out the best phrases. I like to bold them and increase the font size as things stick out to me over several days, but you could also print and highlight. From there, you cut out the ‘fat’ and end up with a poem! Perhaps I’ll start sharing some here.

Promoting myself is hard, but I’ve gotta do it, right?
