What Helped Me Most This Week
This time, it's editing!
I’m trying to do something creative every day. I’m documenting it here.
This week, I was terribly inconsistent with posting because I started a new job. Despite that, though, I did manage to edit some micro pieces, which helped me to feel like I was still being a writer, even if I wasn’t actively writing.
I’ve never been the type to think you have to write every day, mainly because I find it sort of impossible to do that. This micro practice is the closest I’ve come to an everyday writing situation, but it truly only feels sustainable because there’s such a quick payoff. If I’m writing a new piece every day, that means I’m literally creating a new, complete story. But, even if I’m just editing something I’ve already written, that still means I’m getting ‘polished’ pieces at least once a week. I can not express just how good it feels to be productive in that way.
Working on a novel is hard. It’s such a long project, and it can be so unwieldy, and it takes so much effort to keep going on it until it’s finished. I’m still a long way away from a finished novel, and I didn’t realize how much that was weighing me down. I’m so frustrated with it. These micros, though? They’re quick and delightful. Editing them is a joy because they’re so contained. I’m able to make detailed, minute changes to come up with something that I’m really happy with, even if at the end of the day I decide it’s not worth showing to people. Being able to have that sense of completion and satisfaction with these little micros has done wonders for my writer self-esteem.

So, that’s what actually helped my creativity, and also helped me generally, the most this week.
Love and gratitude, as always.
