What Helped Me Most This Week
Or, what am I actually trying to do here?
I’m trying to do something creative every day. I’m documenting it here.
This week, I only managed to post to my blog once, where I mentioned how I wrote a new micro and watched a Coen Brothers movie. Of course, I did a lot of things that technically helped my creativity, but they didn’t make it to my blog. So where normally I’d be talking about the creative thing that helped me the most this week, I’m actually reflecting a little bit on why I’m trying to do the blog, and this newsletter, and my Patreon, and my lit mag (etc., etc. I’m also in grad school, in case anyone’s forgotten!).
I have a very love/hate relationship with social media. On the one hand, I find it kind of interesting. I’ve taken courses on it, and I’ve had to do it as part of my job a bit (and I’ve hated it every time). But, I’ve also really felt this pressure to try and build a ‘following’ because one day, I would like to publish a novel, and having a following can assist with that sort of thing (so I’ve been told, at least). So I’m trying out all these other things to try and reach out to people, like the blog and the newsletter.
I went to the Urban Librarians Unite conference on Saturday, and the theme was ‘throwing spaghetti at the wall,’ which apparently was the chosen theme because they had so much trouble coming up with something. That sort of feels like what I’m doing right now—throwing a lot of spaghetti with no real feel for what’s working and what isn’t. But I kind of feel like I have to keep throwing the spaghetti.
Love and gratitude, as always.
